Title case styles: APA, Chicago, AP, and MLA
Choose the standard required by your teacher, editor, or publisher. The same words can be capitalized differently under different standards. Title case is not the same as giving every word an initial capital.
APA Title Case Converter
Use APA title case when your assignment calls for a title or heading in APA style. It is not the same as formatting an APA reference: many reference titles use sentence case instead.
The first word and the first word after a subtitle separator are capitalized. Major words and words with four or more letters take capitals; short articles and connecting words can stay lowercase. Short verbs such as “is” still take a capital.
a guide to writing with clarity→A Guide to Writing With Clarity
Check names, abbreviations, compounds, and words whose role depends on the sentence. For example, “on” in “Turn On the Light” is an adverb, but in “Notes on Writing” it is a preposition. The tool flags words that may need this distinction; edit the result to match your meaning. Your teacher’s requirements take priority.
Use APA title case ↑Chicago Title Case Converter
Choose Chicago for a book title or editorial heading when your publisher asks for Chicago headline-style capitalization. This option follows the 18th-edition distinction for longer prepositions, not the older convention of lowercasing every preposition.
Capitalize the first and last words. Short articles, certain conjunctions, and short prepositions stay lowercase. Prepositions of five or more letters are capitalized, so “with” and “through” are treated differently.
a walk with friends through town→A Walk with Friends Through Town
A colon introduces a subtitle; an em dash alone does not force the next small word into capitals. Review compounds, prefixes, and words used as adverbs rather than prepositions. A word list alone cannot settle every grammatical context.
Chicago: longer prepositions in the 18th edition
Use Chicago title case ↑AP Title Case Converter
Use this option for AP-style composition titles, such as a book or film title. It is not a universal rule for news headlines; a publication may use its own headline style.
Capitalize the first and last words, principal words, and prepositions of four or more letters. Short connecting words usually remain lowercase. “With” therefore takes a capital here but not in Chicago.
a walk with friends→A Walk With Friends
AP also distinguishes “To” before a verb from “to” before a destination. The tool flags this for review and recognizes common verbs; check unfamiliar phrases, names, and compounds against your required style.

Use AP title case ↑MLA Title Case Converter
Choose MLA for an English-language essay, source title, or class handout when MLA title capitalization is required. Formatting an entire citation involves more than changing letter case.
Capitalize the first, last, and principal words. Articles, coordinating conjunctions, and prepositions within a title generally remain lowercase. A long preposition such as “through” stays lowercase here.
a journey through history→A Journey through History
Multiword prepositions such as “according to” stay lowercase within a title. Subordinating phrases such as “as if” take capitals. For a prefixed compound that a dictionary also spells as one word, MLA keeps the part after the hyphen lowercase: anti-slavery campaigns becomes Anti-slavery Campaigns. Other compounds may need a dictionary check.
Known abbreviations such as LOL, BTW, and TMI retain capitals. Check unusual compounds, grammatical context, and non-English titles separately. This tool does not infer every word’s role. If a message or the first line of an untitled poem serves as its title, retain the source spelling instead of applying title case.
MLA Style Center: capitalizing a title
Use MLA title case ↑This independent tool is not endorsed by these style publishers. It changes capitalization only; it does not format references, verify grammar, or replace editorial review.
Sentence Case Converter
Turn a title or paragraph written in capitals into a more natural reading format. Use it for a heading, slide caption, or short piece of interface text that should look like a sentence.
How it works
The first word of each line and words after sentence-ending punctuation take a capital. A colon also starts a new heading segment. Known names such as iPhone and API are kept; other words become lowercase.
A GUIDE TO WRITING. START HERE.→A guide to writing. Start here.
What to check
Review proper names such as London, initials, and abbreviations. Add names to “Keep these spellings” before converting. The tool does not identify every name or sentence boundary.
Use sentence case ↑When to use lowercase conversion
Fix text typed with Caps Lock on, normalize a list of labels, or prepare text for a workflow that explicitly requires lowercase.
How it works
Every English capital A–Z becomes a–z, including brand names and abbreviations. Spaces, punctuation, numbers, and line breaks stay in place.
HELLO iPhone API!→hello iphone api!
What to check
Addresses, code, and passwords can be case-sensitive. This is a text formatter, not a code formatter. Accented letters are unchanged: ÉCOLE becomes École.
Use uppercase to lowercase ↑Uppercase Converter
Prepare an all-capital label, short sign, or heading when a design or submission format asks for uppercase. It is usually less comfortable for long paragraphs.
How it works
Every English lowercase letter a–z becomes A–Z. Names change too. No words are rewritten, and punctuation and spacing stay unchanged.
Hello iPhone API!→HELLO IPHONE API!
What to check
This is English-letter conversion. Accented and non-Latin letters are not case-mapped: café becomes CAFé. For styling a web heading without changing its source text, CSS may be more appropriate.
Use uppercase ↑Capitalize Each Word
Make a list of labels or short display headings begin each word with a capital when no editorial style is required.
How it works
The first letter of each English word is capitalized and the remaining letters are lowercased. Hyphen-separated parts are handled individually. Small words such as “and” and “to” take capitals too.
a guide to API and iPhone→A Guide To Api And Iphone
What to check
This is not APA, Chicago, AP, or MLA title case. It can change acronym and brand spelling. Non-English words are preserved; preferred spellings apply only to title case and sentence case.
Use capitalize each word ↑Toggle Case Converter
Reverse the case of an English text selection, or fix a mixed-case phrase typed with the wrong Caps Lock state.
How it works
Each lowercase English letter becomes uppercase, and each uppercase English letter becomes lowercase. This flips the existing pattern; it does not create an aLtErNaTiNg pattern.
hELLO wORLD!→Hello World!
What to check
Numbers, symbols, accented letters, and spacing are preserved. Toggling twice restores the original letter case. Review the result before using it in a name or address.
Use toggle case ↑Keep your text, spacing, and privacy
All six formats run in your browser without an AI API or account. Input, results, and preferred spellings are not uploaded or saved by this tool. You can process up to 20,000 characters and 100 lines at once; line endings are normalized, while blank lines and spaces are kept.
Changing the format does not overwrite your work. Select Convert to apply it. If you edited the result, confirm the replacement first; Undo can restore that previous state once.
Questions about title capitalization
Does this rewrite my title?
No. Only letter casing changes. Words are not added, removed, or translated.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser, without a text-processing API. Loading the site still requests its static files.
Can I convert multiple lines?
Yes: up to 100 lines and 20,000 Unicode code points. A trailing line break counts as an empty line. We never silently trim your text to fit.
Is title case the same as capitalizing every word?
No. Writing styles have rules for small words, punctuation, and compounds. Check the selected style and review uncertain words.
